Coal India Limited’s April production surged by 7.3% to 61.8 million tonnes (MT), with coal offtake rising by 3.2% to 64.3 MT. In FY24, production increased by 10% to 773.6 MT but missed the 780 MT target. CIL contributes over 80% to India's coal production.
Coal India Ltd (CIL) announced a 7.3% increase in coal production for April, reaching 61.8 million tonnes (MT). This marks a significant rise from the 57.6 MT produced in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal year.
Alongside production, CIL's coal offtake also saw growth, registering a 3.2% increase to 64.3 MT compared to 62.3 MT in the same period last year. Coal offtake refers to the quantity of dry fuel supplied from the pitheads.
Among the coal produced by CIL in April, Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) contributed the highest with 16 MT, followed by South Eastern Coalfields (SECL) with 14.1 MT, and Northern Coalfields Ltd with 11.8 MT, among others.
Despite the monthly surge, CIL's annual production for FY24 saw a 10% increase to 773.6 MT. However, this figure fell short of the company's production target of 780 MT for the fiscal year. Notably, CIL's production stood at 703.2 MT in the previous fiscal year 2022-23.
Coal India Ltd continues to play a crucial role in the domestic coal sector, accounting for over 80% of the country's coal production. The increase in production and offtake signifies the company's efforts to meet the growing demand for coal in various sectors, although challenges in meeting annual targets persist.
