0:00 / 0:00

Every asset or security comes with its unique ID, be it bonds, stocks or mutual funds. But have you ever wondered how this ID is assigned? Well, this is where the CUSIP system comes into play. CUSIP, abbreviated from Committee on Uniform Securities Identification Procedures, has the job of assigning the CUSIP number to securities. The CUSIP number is a nine-character long alphanumeric code that helps identify assets.

This number is unique to each security and on the business end of the stock market, it also helps aid trading in various securities and determines how efficiently their settlements and clearances take place. With the help of the CUSIP number, traders and financial institutions can easily track and manage securities in their portfolios.

Structure of a CUSIP Number

The CUSIP number, as already mentioned, is a unique, nine-character-long alphanumeric code that helps identify different assets. The structure of a CUSIP number can be broken down into three distinct parts.

The first part of a CUSIP number consists of the first 6 characters that are used to identify the asset’s unique name or the issuer. The second part of the CUSIP number is two characters that work as the identifier for the type of asset the CUSIP number is being used for.

The last part of the CUSIP number consists of the final character which is an automatically generated digit.

How do CUSIP Numbers work?

Here is a look at how the CUSIP number works.

  • The CUSIP number works the same way as stock symbols.

  • Stock symbols are assigned to shares of public companies.

  • The CUSIP number is a unique way to identify specific equity, debt and various other securities.

  • The CUSIP number is a nine-character long alphanumeric combination having three parts.

  • The first six characters help identify the security issuer and are known as the base of the CUSIP number or as CUSIP-6.

  • The next two digits, i.e. the seventh and eighth, are used to identify the type of security the CUSIP number belongs to.

  • The ninth and final character of the CUSIP number is automatically generated.
