DAC Approves Defence Acquisitions Worth Over Rs 54,000 Crore

Synopsis:

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved capital acquisition proposals worth over Rs 54,000 crore to enhance the capabilities of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, significantly boosting combat readiness and operational efficiency.

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has cleared capital acquisition proposals worth more than Rs 54,000 crore to bolster India’s defence capabilities. The approvals cover major procurements for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, aiming to modernise equipment and enhance combat effectiveness. This significant development comes as part of India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its military readiness and improve operational efficiency in line with the Ministry of Defence’s ‘Year of Reforms’ initiative for 2025.

The approved proposals include high-power engines for tanks, anti-submarine warfare torpedoes, and advanced airborne surveillance systems. The Indian Army will receive upgraded engines for T-90 tanks, boosting power from 1,000 HP to 1,350 HP, which will enhance mobility in tough terrains, especially high-altitude regions. The Indian Navy will benefit from the procurement of Varunastra torpedoes, indigenously developed by the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, to strengthen anti-submarine warfare capabilities. The Indian Air Force will see a boost in its surveillance with the acquisition of Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) aircraft systems.

Boosting Army Capabilities With Powerful Engines

The Indian Army's combat readiness will significantly improve with the induction of more powerful 1,350 HP engines to replace the existing 1,000 HP engines in T-90 tanks. The enhancement aims to boost the power-to-weight ratio, thereby increasing mobility and allowing tanks to navigate challenging terrains. This upgrade is particularly crucial for high-altitude areas, where enhanced mobility is essential for strategic advantage.

Navy Strengthens Anti-Submarine Warfare

The Indian Navy's anti-submarine warfare capabilities will be significantly enhanced with the acquisition of Varunastra torpedoes. These indigenously developed, ship-launched combat torpedoes offer precise targeting and effective submarine threat neutralisation. Developed by the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, these torpedoes are a major step towards self-reliance in defence technology, contributing to the Navy’s comprehensive combat capabilities.

Air Force To Enhance Aerial Surveillance

The Indian Air Force will significantly bolster its aerial surveillance capabilities with the acquisition of Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) aircraft systems. These advanced systems provide real-time surveillance and monitoring of aerial threats, significantly boosting combat effectiveness and situational awareness. In modern warfare, having robust airborne surveillance systems is vital for maintaining air superiority and ensuring the security of national airspace.

Streamlined Procurement Under ‘Year Of Reforms’

The Ministry of Defence’s ‘Year of Reforms’ initiative for 2025 has led to the introduction of revised guidelines aimed at reducing procedural delays and ensuring faster acquisitions. This new framework allows the armed forces to promptly address their operational requirements and strengthens India’s defence posture amid evolving global security challenges.

With the DAC’s approval of capital acquisition proposals worth over Rs 54,000 crore, India is taking a significant step towards modernising its armed forces and enhancing combat capabilities. The upgraded engines, torpedoes, and surveillance systems reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening defence infrastructure while promoting self-reliance in advanced military technology.
