The Employees' Provident Fund is a savings scheme backed by the Indian government. If you are a salaried employee and your organisation is mandated to open EPF accounts for its employees, both you and your employee shall contribute 12% of your monthly salary to the EPF. You can choose to contribute a higher amount through the Voluntary Provident Fund. It is easy to check your PF balance at any time and there are several ways to do so. In this article, we shall discuss how you can complete a PF balance check.
As its name suggests, EPF balance is the balance available in an individual's EPF account at a particular point in time. As per EPF rules, your employee is required to deposit EPF payment in your EPF account by the 15th of the month following the month of salary. An equivalent contribution is required to be deducted from your salary as an employee's contribution. You can easily check your EPF balance online or through a missed call or SMS.
You can check your EPF balance by visiting the official portal/s of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), UMANG app, or SMS/ missed call to a designated number. Let us discuss each of these methods to carry out a PF balance check online.

It is pivotal to check your EPF balance on a regular basis. By checking your PF balance regularly, you can be aware of every transaction in your EPF account, including deposits and withdrawals. Furthermore, you can check the progress of your retirement corpus with EPF and track your overall retirement plan. You can also decide whether to increase your EPF contributions through Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF). Another key benefit of checking your EPF balance on a regular basis is that you can detect any suspicious activity in your EPF account in a timely manner.
The quantum of EPF contributions depends on your salary. Your employer has to contribute 12% of your monthly salary towards EPF. The amount used for this calculation is the basic salary and the dearness allowance. Another contribution of 12% (of basic pay plus dearness allowance) is deducted from your salary and deposited in your EPF account as an employee's contribution. The interest on EPF accounts is computed based on the opening balance in the account each month. Interest is credited to the account at the end of the financial year.
Your employer's contribution to your EPF account is tax exempt. The amount that is deposited in your EPF account as employee contribution is eligible for a tax deduction under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Furthermore, the interest payments on EPF balance and the maturity proceeds are also tax exempt.
The process of checking EPF balance online and through missed calls or SMS is extremely seamless. It is advisable to check your EPF balance on a regular basis and flag any suspicious activity in your EPF account. You must keep your EPF account UAN active and linked to your PAN card, Aadhaar card, and bank account.
