Field Trial Success: Mazagon Dock and ThyssenKrupp successfully demonstrated air-independent propulsion (AIP) technology.
Strategic Advantage: These submarines will enhance underwater endurance, staying submerged for over two weeks without surfacing.
Project Delays: Originally conceptualised over a decade ago, the project is critical to replacing ageing naval assets.

The submarines equipped with AIP technology can operate underwater for extended periods, offering a strategic edge in stealth and combat readiness. This feature addresses a crucial gap in the Indian Navy's fleet, as its 17 operational conventional submarines lack AIP technology. Neighbouring China and Pakistan already operate submarines with similar capabilities, heightening the importance of this upgrade.
Initiated more than ten years ago, Project P-75I has faced delays due to technological and operational requirements. The defence ministry has now invited Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders for commercial negotiations following their successful trials. Once finalised, the construction is expected to deliver the first submarine within 3-5 years.
Specification | Current Fleet | New Submarines |
Technology | No AIP | AIP-enabled |
Operational Duration | 3-4 days underwater | 14+ days underwater |

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders' progress in the P-75I project underlines its commitment to bolstering India’s naval strength. With commercial negotiations imminent, the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders share price could reflect growing investor confidence in this significant defence collaboration. This project is poised to redefine India’s maritime security capabilities.
