Synopsis:

The Modi 3.0 cabinet has extended the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to build an additional 3 crore housing units. In the past decade, over 4.21 crore houses have been constructed. PM Modi emphasises inclusive growth and quality living for all citizens.

An Overview

In its inaugural meeting on Monday, the Modi 3.0 government decided to extend the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) to include an additional 3 crore urban and rural households.

This announcement mirrors the announcement made in the interim budget that was presented on Feb 1, 2024, where the government had allocated ₹54,500 Cr for PMAY-Rural and ₹26,170.61 Cr for PMAY-Urban.

Key Features of the 3 Crore Additional Houses

  • The 3 crore additional houses will be constructed over the next five years to meet the housing requirements of eligible families.
  • These houses shall be constructed in rural as well as urban areas, thus covering the country as a whole.
  • Each housing unit will have essential facilities like toilets inside the house, LPG gas connections, electricity and functional taps with running water.

Prime Minister’s Promise to ‘Ease of Living’

  • According to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this move is aimed at ensuring that every citizen has access to better living standards.
  • He highlighted that this expansion of PMAY affirms the dedication of the NDA government towards growth and social welfare.
  • The expanded policy is expected to transform the lives of millions across India who until now had no permanent roof over their heads. This makes it one among many steps taken by authorities towards improving public health through the provision of affordable accommodation.

About Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana

Scheme Overview

  • The PMAY was launched in 2015-16 to help eligible urban and rural families by constructing houses with basic necessities.
  • Houses under PMAY are equipped with toilets, LPG connections, electricity connections, and tap connections, achieved through convergence with other government schemes.

Achievements and Future Goals

  • According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, 1.19 crore houses have been sanctioned in urban areas, with 83.5 lakh built already.
  • In rural areas, over 2.55 crore houses have been constructed against the approved target of 2.95 crore.
  • The scheme, a flagship initiative of the Modi government, seeks to reduce poverty and provide housing for every citizen.

Recent Developments

  • During the interim budget in February, Finance Minister N. Sitharaman announced the construction of two crore more houses under the scheme in the next five years.
  • A new sub-scheme of PMAY(U) proposed by the finance minister will be detailed and sent to the cabinet for approval.
  • This sub-scheme will replace the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS), discontinued in March 2021, and will help middle-income groups purchase or construct their own homes.

Extension of PMAY

Expansion Details

  • The PMAY will further be expanded to construct 3 crore additional rural and urban houses with essential amenities.
  • Of the 3 crore housing units, 2 crore will be built in rural areas, while the remaining 1 crore will be constructed in urban areas across the country over the next five years.
  • The extension will increase the total number of houses to be built under the scheme, addressing the growing housing needs of the population.

Achievements So Far

  • 4.21 crore houses have been constructed under various housing schemes for underprivileged families over the last decade.
  • These provisions are made possible through joint efforts with other Central and State Government programmes.

Long-term Impact

  • It is anticipated that there will be significant employment opportunities created in the construction sector and related industries.

  • Stable housing should improve health, and education while also leading to better economic prospects and higher living standards among beneficiaries.

  • Additionally, it is expected that slums will decrease significantly, particularly in cities, enhancing overall urban infrastructure and fostering the development of smart cities.

In Conclusion

This expansion of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to accommodate an extra 3 crore housing units signifies a major step forward in addressing India’s growing housing demand. The provision of basic facilities within these residential units further confirms the Modi Government’s commitment towards inclusive growth and enhanced quality of life for all citizens.
