On account of changes in GST and customs duty as announced by FM Nirmala Sitharaman in her Union Budget 2024 speech, several goods have become cheaper and costlier. While items like mobile phones, cancer medicines, and seafood got cheaper; the price of telecom equipment and plastic products increased.

Union Budget 2024 Highlight

The Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced Union Budget 2024 on July 23 announcing various reforms to indirect tax. The government aims to further simplify and rationalise the GST tax structure. Thus, significant changes were introduced in GST, making certain goods cheaper and others costlier. Here’s a complete list of all the goods that became costlier and cheaper.

Items That Have Become Cheaper

  • Mobile phones and accessories (tax reduced to 15%)
  • Gold and silver (tax reduced to 6%)
  • Platinum (tax reduced to 6.4%)
  • Cancer treatment medicines (exempted)
  • Ferro nickel (tax removed)
  • Blister copper (tax removed)
  • Solar panels and cells (expanded list of exempted capital goods)
  • Critical minerals (fully exempted)
  • Shrimp and fish feed (tax reduced to 5%)
  • X-ray machines
  • Electric vehicles
  • Leather shoes, sandals, and wallets
  • Imported jewellery
  • Seafood

Items That Have Become Costlier

  • Telecom equipment (tax increased to 15% from 10%)
  • Plastic products (tax increased)
  • Ammonium nitrate (tax increased to 10%)
