Many questions are raised by traders who have just started on their stock market journey. One of these questions happens to be “When is intraday profit credited?”. This is the exact question we will help you get answers to in this blog.

Concerning certain new regulations brought on by SEBI or the Securities and Exchange Board of India, the profits that traders make during intraday trading stay blocked till the time the market closes on the next working day.

Basically, with these rules in place, traders will not be able to use their intraday profits to carry out any other orders on the same day.

Let us dive a little deeper into this aspect.

How Does It Impact You?

To understand how these regulations will affect you, here's a look at a few examples.

Supposing on transaction day (T), say on the 4th of November, 2024, you carried out 3 intraday transactions.

Date

6

9,000

4 Nov 2024

Sell

18

1300

23,400

Keeping this table in mind, here are some observations:

  1. Two ‘buy’ transactions were carried out:

    • The first of 10 shares worth ₹1,000 each, amounting to ₹10,000

    • The second 6 shares worth ₹1,500 each, amounting to ₹9,000

    • The total purchase transactions with these in mind comes to ₹19,000

  2. One ‘sell’ transaction was carried out:

    • 18 shares worth ₹1,300 each, amounting to ₹23,400

With these numbers in mind, the intraday profit for you comes to ₹4,400

Now keeping this intraday profit in mind, here are a few scenarios to help explain how the new regulations might affect you.

Scenario 1: When T or Transaction Day is a Weekday

  • The profit of ₹4,400 will be unblocked for you to use on T+1 day

  • In this example, T+1 day would mean 5th November 2024 as both are weekdays.

  • On T+1 day, i.e. 5th November 2024, at 3.30 p.m., since that is when the markets close, your profit would be unlocked.

Scenario 2: T Day Falls On a Friday

  • Let us suppose November 4th turns out to be a Friday, then your intraday profit will get unblocked in T+1 working day.

  • This means that the next working day would be Monday, i.e. 7th November and not Saturday or 5th November.

  • Hence the Intraday profit will be unlocked by 7th November, 3:30 pm.

Scenario 3: When T+1 day is a Market Holiday

  • If 5th November is a market holiday, then the same case as scenario 2 will repeat here

  • Hence, your profit will be unblocked by 6th November, 3:30 pm.

Conclusion

Though it can be a little confusing, once you understand the workings of the market and SEBI’s rules, you will be able to figure out when your intraday profits will be credited to your account on any given trading day.
