Stock/Share Market Timings in India
The Indian stock market operates in three main segments, each with distinct timings. Below are the updated share market timings for 2024:
Pre-opening Timing
This session lasts from 9:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m., during which orders to purchase or sell securities can be placed. It is divided into three distinct periods:
9:00 a.m. – 9:08 a.m.:
During this time, investors can place, modify, or cancel orders for transactions. Orders placed during this period are prioritized when the actual trading begins, as they are cleared first.
9:08 a.m. – 9:12 a.m.:
This phase is responsible for price determination using the demand and supply of securities. A multilateral order matching system is used to determine the price at which trading will begin. Orders placed earlier cannot be modified during this period.
9:12 a.m. – 9:15 a.m.:
This is the transition period between the pre-opening and normal session. No new orders can be placed, modified, or canceled during this time.
Normal Session
The normal share market timing runs from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This is the primary trading period, where transactions follow the bilateral order matching system. Prices are determined by the demand and supply of securities, which often leads to market fluctuations.
Post-closing Session
The stock market closing time is at 3:30 p.m. No transactions occur after this time, but the closing price of securities is determined, which influences the next day’s opening prices. The post-closing session is divided into two periods:
3:30 p.m. – 3:40 p.m.:
The closing price is calculated as a weighted average of prices between 3:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. This average is used for benchmark indices like Nifty, Sensex, etc.
3:40 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.:
This is the post-closing session when investors can place orders for the next day. If enough buyers and sellers are present, these orders are confirmed and executed at the next day’s opening price.
Aftermarket Orders
After the regular trading hours, no transactions occur. However, investors can place aftermarket orders, which will be executed at the opening market price the following trading day.
Muhurat Trading
On Diwali, the stock market holds a special one-hour trading session known as Muhurat Trading. This event is considered auspicious, marking the beginning of the new financial year according to the Hindu calendar. For 2024, Muhurat Trading is scheduled for Friday, November 01, 2024. The exact share market timings for this session will be notified closer to the date.
Indian stock market participants should familiarize themselves with these timings to ensure they make the most of the trading hours and plan their strategies accordingly.
