The Indian equity markets closed lower today as risk-off sentiment dominated following the United States’ tariff announcement. Despite an initial attempt at recovery, gains were short-lived after confirmation of a 26% tariff on U.S. imports.
The Sensex lost 322.08 points, a decline of 0.42%, settling at 76,295.36. Meanwhile, the Nifty dropped 82.25 points, a 0.35% decrease, closing at 23,250.10.

While the benchmark indices declined, broader markets showed strength. The Smallcap index rose 0.7%, and the Midcap index edged up 0.3%, indicating selective buying interest.
IT Index plunged 4%, reacting sharply to the tariff news.
Auto Index fell 1% amid global uncertainties.
Pharma Index gained 2%, benefiting from tariff exemptions on key exports.
Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) Bank Index rose 1.9%.
The Power Index jumped 1.8%, reflecting strong domestic interest in energy stocks.

One of the top performers of the day was Power Grid, which gained 4.60%, driven by strong sectoral demand. On the flip side, TCS emerged as the biggest loser, dropping 3.97%.
